Job Summary The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Lead Engineer in Research, with experience in connected vehicle technology (V2X) or advanced vehicle systems engineering, to plan project execution, coordinate the development of engineering systems, and monitor progress to ensure successful completion of major, complex research projects. This is a term-limited position through February 8, 2027, with possible renewal based on performance and funding extension.What You'll Do Lead systems engineering to develop and cascade requirements to subcontractors.
Lead program management, plan project execution, design and develop engineering systems, and monitor progress, implementing changes, when necessary, to ensure project success and in compliance with existing and developing standards. Reviews project plans and specifications to set project milestones, develop a detailed work plan for task allocation of engineering and research activities, oversee and monitor budgets and timelines, to ensure timely completion of the project. Identify and request appropriate resources needed, review and evaluate bids and proposals from subcontractors, and assist with resource allocation.
Monitor progress of research and engineering activities, analyze and evaluate courses of action, implementing changes as necessary. Manage the integration of vendor tasks and track and review vendor deliverables, ensuring adherence to quality standards. Assemble a multidisciplinary team that will develop and implement an outreach and education and workforce development plan, describing the activities to be performed and disseminating the results of the project for stakeholder feedback.
Ensure compliance with U-M policies and regulations (IRB, HSIP, Risk Management). Participate in working policy groups and implement changing security and communication protocol standards, as needed. Communicate regularly with the primary investigators and Sponsors on project status and report outcomes and present results to stakeholders in industry, government and academia.
Collaborate with researchers in preparation of papers for publication and work with U-M units and departments to ensure the development of projects, as required. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and relative work experience in electrical or network engineering will be considered. 7+ years of relevant work in a technical or research setting related to connected vehicle technology (V2X) or advanced vehicle systems engineering.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to present information effectively to stakeholders. Excellent attention to detail, multi-tasking and problem-solving ability. Strong organization and time management skills with ability to prioritize and complete tasks based on project and organizational needs.
Demonstrated experience working with multiple internal and external partners in a multidisciplinary research environment. Demonstrated experience working within the U.S. regulatory compliance environment.
Academic/Government research experience. Excellent computer skills including solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, eResearch or similar university software platforms. PowerPoint and Zoom are required.
Desired Qualifications* Experience working with sponsored project budgets. Project management skills including scheduling and budgeting and/or professional project management certification through PMI or other recognized certification organization.Modes of WorkThis position is classified as hybrid.
